Make Mental Health In The Workplace Mandatory!

No one is ever prepared for tragedy. Eddie Rejano, Brian Ilesic and Michelle Shegelski, employees of G4S, were not expecting that they wouldn't return from work on the fated evening of June 15, 2012. Matthew Schuman was not preparing to be rushed to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. None of their families were predicting what it would be like to cope with the fallout of their loved ones being shot and killed at work. And none of their colleagues knew what it would be like to go to work in the following days, weeks and months, knowing that it had been one of their coworkers that had taken the lives of these people.

It is for these reasons that Teamsters Local Union 362 wants to make mental health mandatory in every workplace. We want mental health support and education in the workplace so that the stigma and prejudice associated with all forms of mental illness can one day be lifted. Mental health issues such as depression, anxiety and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that stem from an event such as the tragedy at G4S, deeply cuts into the well-being of a person and the ripple effect can be catastrophic in the decay of a healthy and happy work team.

Not everyone with mental health issues is violent, but there is enough stigma and fear around these issues for us to recognize the fact that we need to do something to make a change. This is why we want to demand that we make mental health in the workplace mandatory - and we urge that you help us to make it happen by participating in the #makeitmandatory campaign. By speaking up together, we can call on cultural influencers, public figures and policy makers to help us affect positive change throughout workplaces; by pressuring the government and companies to create a safe work place, we can help ensure that people can come home safely and healthy at the end of the day.

Airdrie Transit Drivers Are Now UNION!

First of all the Teamsters would like to congratulate the employees of Cardinal Coach Lines ULC consisting of "All transit drivers working in and out of the City of Airdrie" who recently ratified a Collective Agreement.

Some of the highlights of their agreement are as follows:

  • A one and a half (1 1/2) increase in wages.
  • Discrimination & workplace harassment clause.
  • Voice at the workplace.
  • Safety conditions.
  • Twelve (12) general holidays.
  • Grievance procedure.

Four Ways to Invest In Your Career

1. Get to Know and Unite With Your Coworkers
You are going to spend a lot of time with the people that you work with. As a Teamster, it’s an integral part of our organization that we support each other in all of our careers, from learning skills to recognizing issues. The better you know the Members that surround you in your work site, the better you will be able to support them in their career, and them in yours. If we are united, we are stronger, and this will ultimately result in a better workplace and most satisfied workforce.

2. Seek Mentorship
The Teamsters organization is a family and there are countless workers that are willing to help out their fellow Members. After all, that is the nature of the Teamsters: we work together. More experienced Members can provide valuable information to newer Members on how to have a successful, union-complimented career. This will allow everyone to have the best possible career that they can; because a healthy career is just as much about developing your skills, maintaining your health, ensuring your wellness, and looking after your family as it is about getting the job done well.

3. Care About What You Do
Some people are fortunate enough to love their work, but we have all felt underpaid, under-utilized and under-stimulated before. Ultimately, this is part of being at work; some days will be more challenging than others and not everyday is going to be the best day of your life. But if you take the time to mentally and emotionally invest yourself into what you do, the rewards will feel bigger and more fulfilling at the end of the day. So engage yourself in your work and execute your tasks to the best of your ability. Think about how you can do it better, and then do it better. This will allow you a level of autonomy and satisfaction at work that you may not otherwise discover.

4. Look After Your Health
Investing in your health is investing in yourself. This typically means an investment in time as well as money, but if you take the time to keep your body healthy and strong, you will be less prone to work-related injury and fatigue. If the body breaks down from overuse or underuse (depending on your line of work), it can have disastrous effects on the way that you can manage your working life. Memberships to fitness centres aren’t always cheap, but regular exercise will make you stronger in your body, better at your job and happier in your life.

Opposing Forces: Is It Always Corporations VS. Workers?

HandIn the history of unions fighting for workers’ rights, there has been a discourse around the idea of corporations and workers being in direct opposition of each other. The conversation has brought important issues to the forefront; issues like health and safety, equality and fair treatment of workers, compensation and benefits. However, is there an issue in the way that the identities of corporations and workers are perceived? Are the two groups in direct opposition of each other? Is there a disconnection between corporations and workers? How are they in dialogue with each other?

The short answer is: The Union. Unions are the link that reconciles a one-dimensional understanding of corporations and workers. This incomplete perception, wherein corporations have an unfair and exploitative advantage and workers are powerless, does not take into consideration the work that unions are doing to unite the two and ensure that appropriate measures are being taken on work sites to guarantee the well being of workers.

If corporations and workers were to constantly and directly oppose each other, the economy would fall apart. Ultimately, corporations that work with unions have the rights of workers in mind; if a corporation is actively engaged with unions, it indicates, at the very least, that they value their employees and want to create an environment in which the needs of their workers are looked after.

Workers, on the other hand, do not all oppose corporations; they are gainfully employed by them, love and appreciate their work, value the consistency of fair compensation, and enjoy the camaraderie that they share amongst themselves. Workers disagree with the actions of corporations when they know that they are being taken advantage of. Unpaid sick days, poor benefits, inadequate compensation, ineffective safety policies and inequality can result in an unhappy workforce. Workers do not want to stop working, they want to have their rights upheld. Ideally, workers will collectively bargain with their employers, using mechanisms such as issuing a grievance.

Get Organized Now

At times, there is the need for a mediating force for workers and management to hear each other. A force that has the resources and tools to make these mediations, negotiations, conversations – whatever they may be – open and fair. This is why the dialogue between the complimentary, although – at times – opposing forces of corporations and workers is largely directed and executed through the means of unions. From business agents and shop stewards to negotiators and lawyers, the uniting force of the union allows for open, fair and honest engagements between all parties. At times these processes fail, and workers take to more hard line tactics (strike action) to make their voices heard; these actions are not with malicious intent, they are simply a way for the collective voice to be heard.

So yes, corporations are strong, but workers, when organized, united and supported by the union, are an equal match for that power, allowing for the “Corporations VS Workers” to be more along the lines of “fighting the good fight.”
